How to Add Homepage-only Links to WordPress

Posted by admin in Wordpress Tips, Wordpress Tutorials

If you are trying to add a link to your WordPress blog which will only show up on the home page and are frustrated by the fact that WordPress does not have built in support for doing doing so look no further. There is a simple and quick way to accomplish this.

By using several lines of PHP code in your WordPress theme file you can easily add a link or any other content (such as a widget or photos) that you only wish to show up on the home page of your blog. Here it is:

<?php if(is_home() && $post==$posts[0] && !is_paged()) { ?>
{HOMEPAGE-ONLY CONTENT HERE}
<?php } ?>

Getting this script to work is very easy. Simply add the link code instead of “{HOMEPAGE-ONLY CONTENT HERE}”. Then use the “Theme Editor” to put it into the theme files, wherever you want it be.

Please note that this script will not work if placed in the “widgets” area because PHP code is not executed in the “Widgets” section. However this too can be easily accomplished by installing the Exec-PHP plugin. Enable the plugin then configure it and add the above php code to a text widget.

SEO Smart Links – WordPress Plugin

Posted by admin in Blog SEO, Wordpress Plugins

Bloggers often like to link a particular post’s content to a previous post which has relevant information. This is good both for your readers and the search engine like it as well. But it can be quite a time consuming task, as you have to search through your older posts to find relevant content to link to.

Finally a new WordPress plugin has emerged that will simplify this task quite a bit. It offers a better way to interlink your posts to key pages deeper into the you site. The SEO Smart Links plugin will automatically link keywords and phrases in your posts and comments with corresponding posts, pages, categories and tags. All this is done seamlessly without your intervention.

The SEO Smart Links plugin looks at your keyword phrases which match the title of your posts and pages. There is also an option to enable categories and tag matching as well. These keyword phrases are then turned into links which refer to related posts. All of the matching is case insensitive and the original case is preserved.

For example, if the WordPress Theme Installation Guide is mentioned, which is the title of a previous post, it will be automatically converted into a link. All this happens in a totally transparent way, and you can always edit the options from the administration settings panel.

Let’s take a closer look at some of the key features of this very useful plugin:

  • Lets you link the keywords in your posts, pages and comments to your other posts, pages, categories and tags.
  • Gives you full control with customizable options.
  • An incorporated ignore list for keywords you don’t ever want to link.
  • Gives your WordPress blog a good interlinking with no effort on your part.

Installation:

  1. You can download the plugin from here.
  2. Upload the plugin folder to your /wp-content/plugins/ directory.
  3. Query caching – set define(ENABLE_CACHE, true); in your wp-config.php file.
  4. Go to the Plugins page and activate the plugin.
  5. Use the Options page to change your options.

Try this great WordPress plugin for yourself, I am sure you’re going to love it!

Displaying Google Adsense in Feedburner RSS Feeds

Posted by admin in Wordpress Tutorials

If you are using Feedburner for your WordPress blog’s RSS subscriptions, you should hopefully know by now that you can have your Adsense advertisements display within your Feedburner RSS feeds.

This is fairly simple to do. Just login to your Feedburner account, select your feed, then click on “Monetize” and a page will come up requiring you to enter Google Adsense account information, such as:

  • Your email address for the Adsense account
  • Your postal code (for added verification)

As soon as you have entered your AdSense details, Google will send you a verification email, which you need to verify by following a link. At this point you will be taken to a page where you need to give access to Feedburner. This will allow your AdSense and Feendburner accounts to send information back and forth.

After completing these steps, you will then the be taken to a page like the one below in your Feedburner account in the “Monetize” section:

Click “Activate” to activate the service, and setup your AdSense ad format and colors as you would normally do when putting Adsense into your website or WordPress blog. If you have multiple RSS feeds you will need to activate this setting for each feed separately, you can use the same account settings.

Please note that Custom Channels and Custom Palettes will not show up in Feedburner. You have to sign-out and sign-in again for these to work properly.

Once you have created your AdSense ad, you’ll be given an ad code to paste into your WordPress theme files, the instructions given on how acomplish this are very clear. If you are already using Feedburner FeedFlares on your site, Adsense will show up automatically and you don’t need to do anything else.

There are some limitations with this service however:

  • Ads can only be displayed in the 468×60 and 300×250 formats.
  • You cannot choose to show only text ads, it will default to the configuration you’ve set in your Adsense account itself.
  • After the ad code is inserted Adsense ads who up on both your blog and your RSS feed, you cannot choose to display in your RSS feed only.

  • Great for Bringing in Organic Traffic from Search Engines
    WordPress is optimized to be search engine friendly. WordPress has many built in search engine friendly features like the ability to use .htaccess to create static URLs called permalinks, blogrolling and pinging.
